Fit Friday: Setting yourself up for #wins

Can't tell you how many times I blasted "Work" by Rihanna the past couple of days... It was one of those weeks where no matter how organized I tried to be, or how much I planned each day down to the hour, I still felt like a basket case. My heart just wouldn't stop racing!! 

But I have to be honest about something - as much as sometimes I wish I could press pause and go to a zen place where there aren't multiple thoughts streaming through my mind - being busy, maybe even bordering on overwhelming, is when I do my best work. When you have no time to prep the way you'd like to, you're forced to be present and in the moment, to truly listen to the person and environment around you and ultimately make magic moments with whatever is given to you. 

This week was a lesson in setting yourself up for success. The older I get, the more in tune I become with myself, the more I allow myself to listen to that little voice inside my head that always has my best interest instead of the louder, more prominent voice that constantly wants to please everyone around me putting my own needs and wants on the back burner. Knowing and acknowledging that I'm a Type A people-pleaser has made it leaps and bounds easier to find subtle but effective ways for me to stay on track with my personal goals. I forget to put myself first and when my healthy habits fall by the wayside, that's when I spiral out of control with late night binge-eating and self-confidence plummets; so I've set up multiple daily reminders on all my devices to reinforce key habits:

  • 8am - Have a healthy & happy day! 
  • 12pm - Chug water (even though you hate it)
  • 9pm - Say no to snacking! 

Something else I know about myself - I turn into an ugly monster when I'm hungry so once a week I make homemade granola bars (mashed banana, cinnamon, vanilla, flax seeds, almonds, protein powder, 2tbsp of coconut flour, unsweetened shredded coconut) and keep them at my desk and in my purse. No one should ever have to be around you when you're hangry. Not cute. 

When weeks are slammed with shoots, publicity appearances, events, or social engagements, it sometimes feels impossible to find time for the gym (I applaud all the people I know who run through the winter but there's not much more I hate than being cold...). Thankfully there's a cute (i.e.: tiny) gym in my building that's perfect for early morning sweat sessions. Personally, I much prefer working out with my friends, but sometimes you have to work with what's in front of you.

On this week's edition of Fit Friday, my goal is to get the conversation going on how we can set ourselves up for wins, even when life becomes chaotic and taking care of ourselves falls to the back burner.
